Environmental monitoring hardware

Environmental monitoring is a must-be when trying to get the highest SLAs for our IT infrastructure, mostly when talking about datacenters, where an environmental problem like liquid presence or high temperature can affect not just to one but to the most of the hosted devices.

Monitoring environmental parameters is all but expensive: most of the monitoring devices have low prices, they are easy to deploy and their cycle of life is longer than, for instance, the cycle of life of a network switch. Far for being closely bound to propietary solutions, most of the monitoring devices support open network protocols (like SNMP or telnet) that allow them to work together with your preferred monitoring system (Nagios and its forks Centreon and Icinga, Zenoss, MRTG...).

This article introduces a set of devices addressed to control key environmental parameters as temperature, humidity, liquid presence, air flow or smoke. For each it defines what environmental parameter(s) can be monitored and how this data can be accesses from a point of view of harware (interfaces) and software (supported network protocols, alert forwarding, SDKs,...).

Devices

Devices have been classified attending to three aspects:
  • The variable(s) being measured: temperature, humidity, light, liquid presence, air flow and smoke
  • The phisical interface: ethernet, POE ethernet, wireless and human (integrated display)
  • The logical capabilities: support to HTTP and SNMP, email alerts, internal storage...
Shown products are manufactured and/or sold by Comet, Sequoia, Sensormetrix and HW Group, all them selling online and/or with partners in every continent, so the defined products should be available worldwide.
